Spring Magic, PCT Hikers, and the May Bloom at Pinetree
May is a month of transition and energy here at Pinetree Hotel. As the winter snow finishes melting into the creeks, Idyllwild transforms into a bustling hub for adventurers and innovators alike. If you’ve been looking for a reason to escape to the San Jacinto Mountains, this is your sign.
Here is what’s happening on the mountain this month. 🏔️
The Legend of the PCT & The Idyllwild Connection
For those who aren’t familiar, the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is one of the "Triple Crown" hikes of the United States. Spanning 2,650 miles from the California-Mexico border to the edge of British Columbia, Canada, it traverses the highest elevations of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges.
Why Idyllwild matters: Idyllwild is arguably the most famous "Trail Town" on the southern portion of the route. After trekking through the grueling desert heat of San Diego County, hikers hit the San Jacinto Mountains. Our town sits at Mile 179, providing the first true taste of "mountain life." Hikers detour via the Devil’s Slide Trail to reach us, seeking a "Zero Day" (a day of zero miles hiked) to rest, recover, and resupply.
By The Numbers: The Hiker Migration
Every spring, a wave of hikers (colloquially known as "The Bubble") moves through our backyard.
Permit Peak: Approximately 7,000 to 8,000 hikers apply for long-distance permits annually.
The May Rush: This is the "sweet spot" for hikers to pass through Idyllwild—ensuring they hit the high Sierras after the snow has melted but before the wildfires of late summer begin.
Trail Magic: It’s common for locals to provide "Trail Magic"—unexpected acts of kindness like cold sodas or a ride to the trailhead.
Are you hiking the PCT? Come stay with us! 🥾
We know those miles are tough. If you're looking for a place to rest your legs, we offer the perfect "Zero Day" setup.
Sooth your sore muscles in our sauna and cold plunge, or take a dip in our 85°F heated pool. Most of our cabins feature full kitchens so you can cook up a massive "hiker hunger" meal, and our high-speed Wi-Fi is perfect for catching up with family back home.
Hiker Discount: Moving forward, we are committed to supporting the trail community. Active PCT hikers can now use code PCT25 for 25% off their stay!
25 Nights of Trail Magic: A Global Recap
To kick off the season, we recently gave away 25 completely free nights to 25 groups of PCT hikers. What happened next was incredible—we watched our courtyard turn into a global village.
Our sponsored hikers traveled from across the street and across the ocean, including:
International: South Korea, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Australia, Austria, Colombia, and Canada.
USA: Seattle, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Idaho, and even legends from the Appalachian Trail.
Whether they came from Death Valley or Paradise Valley Cafe, it was an honor to provide a soft bed to these world-travelers.
🌸 The May Bloom 🌸
The landscape is currently shifting from the muted tones of winter to a vibrant palette of green and gold.
The Sights: Keep an eye out for the Western Azaleas and the famous Idyllwild Wildflowers that carpet the meadows this month.
The Weather: With daytime temps hovering in the 70s and crisp nights around 45°F, it’s the ideal season for a session in our heated pool or a morning yoga flow in the studio.
Inside the Pinetree Hospitality Retreat
We recently had the honor of hosting a small, high-trust group of 15 hospitality operators for our inaugural Pinetree Hospitality Retreat.
This wasn't your standard industry conference with staged panels. It was a three-day, deep-dive immersion designed for people who actually build and run properties. We believe that hospitality is a craft, not just a business, and sharing that with fellow creators was a highlight of our season.
Plan Your May Escape
Ready to see the "bloom" for yourself or take that well-deserved trail break? Whether you’re booking a Wellness Studio for a solo recharge or Cabin 1 for a 10-person crew, the mountains are ready for you. 🌲
